The Grip & The Feel

Don't throw anything yet. Just make friends with the ball.

GoalEvery kid holds the ball correctly and isn't intimidated by it. No pressure to throw far or fast.

The Handshake Grip

Sit the team in a circle and give every player a ball. Go through the grip in order: two fingers on top of the seams, thumb underneath, ball on the fingertips, not jammed back in the palm.

Say it

“Hold it like you are showing someone a cookie: do not squish it, just hold it up.”

Why it works

Fingertips give you spin control. Palm kills it.

DRILL 02

10 min · 5 ft from wall · Foam ball

Foam Ball Wall Toss

Tape a square target at chest height on a fence. Kids toss underhand at it from 5 feet. Foam balls remove fear of stinging hands or wild throws.

Say it

“Count "1, 2, throw" out loud together so they learn rhythm early.”

Why it works

A bright target gives every kid something concrete to aim at. That beats a long lecture.
